“I must share my thoughts about Martin Taylor’s and Fibonacci’s Lola model guitar, so here’s the treatise. I am lucky enough to own the first production instrument. My friend Michael owns the prototype that Martin played in Great Guitar concerts and other venues. I play this instrument every day and it is leaving a lasting impression on me.'

'The action seems to me about as light as my nylon string guitars, which my tender hands appreciate! It is light, perfectly balanced, relatively small and very comfortable to hold in your arms. Despite that, the neck and fingerboard feel rock solid. It is responsive. A very small movement of the hands, and the sound follows suit. For example, a small movement of the left hand as the sound decays really adds subtlety to the tone and imparts energy. In other words, you can add energy to the tone while playing a sustained diminuendo. You don’t have to think much about it. If that’s what you imagine, it just sort of happens. That’s a quality instrument.'

'Because it’s that kind of an expressive instrument, it doesn’t responds well to “horsing around.” I have a guitar that sounds good if you play it roughly and a bit sloppy. This would not be that kind of instrument. It’s extremely responsive and plays best if you treat it kindly! Because one can hear every sound and note that gets played, very clearly, my playing has changed a bit on this guitar. I find that I just seem to play cleaner than usual, less unneeded notes. You will hear the clean playing... and you cannot hide the sloppy playing.'

'I play the Lola acoustically about 75% of the time. My wife prefers that sound on this guitar. She says it’s “subtly beautiful.” When I do play it plugged in though (in public or in my studio), the sound is fantastic. The other evening I plugged in, added just a wee bit of reverb, turned on a recording, started playing along... and it was astonishing. I kept thinking, “WOW! That guy really sounds great!” I really wasn’t aware of playing at all... just listening to “that guy” in the speakers with the amazing sound. Sort of an out of body experience! If you’re going to play a two note solo, might as well have those two notes sound like a million bucks!'

'I’m not the only person who notices that special sound. Everyone who walks into my studio when I’m playing Lola stops in their tracks, eyes get bigger, starts smiling, and says something to the effect that it sounds so great! They don’t say that when I play my other guitars. Imagine that. My wife tells me I can sell the rest of them... and she doesn’t begrudge me instruments. She does have a great ear though. (Not selling!)'

'You can play any genre on this instrument. I like to play classical music on Lola. For this, the sustain is too long for me when plugged, so I usually play this style acoustically and it sounds beautiful. I also play old Country, old Pop and Jazz, and some kind of “cross-cultural music”. This guitar sonically “fits” perfectly in all these styles. I even ran it through a “fuzz box” to hear it rock out. Really a waste of time though. Why lose that tone? Sort of a travesty, but it still was cool... once. It has a very clear, “jazzy” tone, but it’s not quite “traditional” to my ears. To me, it has a clear, soaring bit of an “anthem” quality. Really sustains. Great for singing a melody! Also, it is an archtop. Changing tunings doesn’t work so well.'

'And dynamics. Some instruments sound best at one dynamic level and a lot of good players actually play that way. This instruments plays from small to huge and everywhere in between, with a subtle transition. It sort of begs you to play dynamically.'

'Anyway, a “normal” player like me sounds many steps better when playing this world class instrument. Oh yes, and Lola is visually a beautiful piece of art. That really gets to the audience too. Folks are always fascinated by the beauty and approach to ask specifically about the guitar. I know ALL Fibonacci instruments are the highest quality. They look and sound amazing. Martin’s guitar is really unique and a total knock out. It is so well designed by a Master and made by skilled and loving hands. If you can get a hold of one of these babies, I think you’ll love it too.”
